Simpatico: Newby's Vet Visit

Newby's Vet Visit

Today we traveled back to Village Animal Hospital for a follow-up visit.  Just to do an x-ray insuring no stones in his bladder or kidneys.

We also got some great advise from the behaviorist/trainer regarding a couple little issues.

With regard to his (shhhhh) pee-pee problem, she says that he is reverting back to puppydom... very young puppy stage.  He is showing his submissive soft part of the belly and trying to explain he is no threat.  She suggests we clear up the mess when he is not around and say nothing.... no response at all... because he might start looking for a response.  *He has only had 2 incidents... one when an 18 wheeler went by and geared down... making that loud exhaust sound.... the other was this morning when we were trying to get him ready to go and the other two to stay here.  It was a bit confusing and scary.

With regard to his flight reaction (you all don't know about what happened... but it was scary and I'm now down 27 years and 87 days where he scared the life out of me.)  She suggests a long lead for 3 weeks coupled with 6mg Melatonin twice daily.  Then give it a couple weeks to see if his anxiety level decreases.

So, we have some training to work on... basic commands, sit, stay, come... and with his stress level its gonna be difficult until he calms down. And, we cannot have him getting scared and running away from us again. Gonna be a long road to train him and comfort him... so I appreciate all your encouragement.

But, I have to admit,  he looked pretty calm in the car! :D

Oooh, mean Newby for scaring you so bad! But, um, I'll confess that I ran away in my very first HOUR in my new home. Momma was taking me for a walk to let us have some time together, but then a skeery motorcycle roared by and I slipped right out of my collar and went running! She was running behind me and shouting, but I didn't know yet that "Casey" meant ME! Finally I decided to go back and see if she was okay when she started crying. Funny, we went right home after that and took a car ride to Petsmart to buy a harness!

Newby is most handsome and we love that Doxie profile. Very interesting about not reacting to the accidents. Makes a ton of sense too kind of like with children acting out just for attention!!
Thank goodness for good vets.
Hugs and Purrs as you move forward.

We are happy to see that you are right on top of Newbys little issues. That's important for him as well as for you too. He must be really high strung if they want him to take melatonin. My Grandpa takes that every night to help him sleep (butt... he's 87), hey I'm a doxie not a Vet, so what do I know!?!

Regardless, we think he is a great addition to your pack and we can't wait to watch him grow.

Hugs,
Lily Belle

YEP... everythingy that you tawked about here.. is pretty much somethingy that can be expected when there is one that may be "off their Game" due to such a HUGE Change in one's life.
My Ernie had the Tinkle issue fur a while.. and MOM did just THAT... Ignore It. And she tries to not put him in.. NEW and UNEXPECTED situations.. or to do so... SLOWLY.
He will be FINE!!! Newby is in GOOD Capable Paws with you!!!

Noobs, if it's any consolation, I had MAJOR 'incidents' when I was first brought to my fur-eva home (we don't talk about i much now as I'm grown up and dawn't like to think about it but ... sometimes, you just have to woof about these things!) - it took the She Two Legged One many many months to house train me and one of the BEST pieces of advice She got was just like your peep got - not to make a fuss so She would wait for me to leave the room or go for a walk before She cleaned up. BUT, when I did a pee outside, OH, the FUSS made of me (and the treats I got - fantastic!). I eventuall learned but for me, it was a bit like you - it was more an anxiety thing as I'd had a tough 6 months start in life and it took me a while to learn things but hang in there buddy, your peep sounds amazing and the 'incidents' will tail off (pardon the pun!!) we are sure!

Woof.
